Who is this course aimed at?

A the first of it's kind, this course has been built with a few different types of riders in mind.

Beginner to intermediate mountain bikers

Learn to fast track your bike handling skills and how to use the trail and your equipment to your advantage.

Advanced mountain bikers

Build on your abilities by exploring the more subtle parts of your bike handing skills. Fine-tune strategies that keep you calm and methodical under pressure.

Mountain bike coaches

Expand your toolkit for helping other riders get the most out of their time on the bike. Take time out to invest in your own riding experiences while you're at it.
Kath's take on performance studies, processes and mountain biking isn't done anywhere else - she's forging new ground!...Away from the high level thinking stuff, Kath is also a mountain bike stoke spirit animal - with the kind of positivity around bikes that is infectious, in a good way!

Frequently asked questions

What times can I choose for the live lesson?

Once you start the course you can choose your live lesson time from our booking calendar. Initially, times will be available on Thursdays (8am-8pm), Fridays (between 8am-6pm) and on Saturday mornings (8am-10am).

What theories or approaches is the course based on?

The course is based on Kath Bicknell's original research while working in embodied cognitive science, cognitive anthropology and performance studies over the last 16 years. That includes a mix of insights from psychology, philosophy, sport science and the arts, but finding evidence and examples from lived experiences (like how expert and beginner riders tackle obstacles on a mountain bike trail in the mud, and how those skills develop over time) rather than drawing conclusions about how people ride bikes from studies of people pushing buttons or tapping a screen in a lab.

We've kept the course practical and in plain English rather than nerding out on theory but mention the research insights now and then as the reason for trying something new or understanding more about why a particular approach is a useful one to have in your toolkit.

In what ways does the course help with anxiety and fear on the bike?

From the cognitive science side of things, the first lessons are designed to give lots of strategies that increase your "sense of control", which increases confidence and decreases anxiety. (Kind of like how holding a hand rail, monitoring other people, the environment, your posture and your movements all help with "minding the gap" when stepping off a train at a busy platform - lots of little things that build in control and decrease the worry that you'll step in the wrong spot.) There are also specific lessons about ways to work with anxiety rather than squash it down or pretend it's not there. Ideally, these are all things you can take with you into extra lessons on the trails with a skills coach and apply other ride/work/life experiences.

I'm neurodivergent. Will this course work with my neurotype?

Mountain biking is more popular with neurodivergent folk than many people realise - whether that's for people who love moving, enjoy the sensory regulation and processing time the sport provides, or as a social outlet with people with a shared (and awesome) special interest. We've worked hard to make this course as neuro-inclusive as we can with the resources we have - for neurodivergent AND neurotypical people.

In neurodivergent terms, at its heart this course is all about things you can do to support executive function while riding. Learning activities are designed to get you to reflect and build on you own strengths, challenges and processes rather than push a one way is the right way approach, and the online course structure allows you to learn in a place, pace and style that suits you. Plus there's the live lesson to dig into whatever most supports you. For neurotypical people, we've made an effort to maintain an awareness of the time keeping lessons to digestible 10-minute chunks, and we've used a highly organised, semi-automated calendar system for scheduling the live lessons.

Subtitles for videos are on the list for version 2, but if you have questions about any other needs/accommodations etc, please let us know via hello@intelligentaction.cc. Accomodations help everyone, so don't feel shy about reaching out.

Is the course suited to junior riders or more aimed at adults?

This first edition of the course is aimed at adult riders. If there is enough interest from junior riders, we will definitely consider making another version of the course aimed at these young and amazing shredders! Please get in touch via hello@intelligentaction.cc so we know what interest is out there!

What do I do if I need to change the time of my 1:1 live lesson?

When you confirm your live lesson time, you will receive a link for changing the time if you need to. You can change the time up to 48 hours before the lesson. Except in the case of an emergency, changing the time with less than 48 hours before the lesson will incur a $90 fee. This is 50% of the standard, 50-minute 1:1 lesson/coaching fee of $180. Please contact us at hello@intelligentaction.cc to do this.

What happens if I miss my 1:1 live lesson?

You have until 48 hours before the lesson to change to another time slot, using the link sent in the confirmation email you received after booking the lesson. If you miss the lesson, you forfeit the lesson. If you wish to rebook another lesson, you can do so for $90. This is 50% of the standard, 50-minute 1:1 lesson/coaching fee of $180. Please contact us at hello@intelligentaction.cc to do this.

I love the idea of this course, but I'd prefer to do it live rather than self-paced. Will you be running it as a live workshop anytime soon?

If there's enough demand, this is definitely something we'd consider. Please get in contact via hello@intelligentaction.cc so we know you're interested in a live version. If we here from enough people we'll get in contact with some possible dates and times.

What is your refund policy?

As outlined above, we currently have a 30-day refund offer. If you do all the video lessons and activities, and you're not satisfied with the learning outcomes of the course, we will refund your course payment.

When the 30-day refund offer is no longer available, as per our terms and conditions, you are eligible for a full refund of fees paid under the following conditions:

Course Cancellation: If Intelligent Action cancels your nominated course before you have logged in to the system, you are entitled to a full refund.

Cooling-Off Period: If you choose to cancel your enrolment within the 7-day cooling-off period and have not accessed the course, you are entitled to a refund, minus a $25 administrative fee (to cover processing and set up costs we incur).

Refunds are not offered beyond the 7-day cooling-off period due to the significant intellectual property and goodwill associated with our courses. If you have further questions, feel free to contact us via email: hello@intelligentaction.cc inserting "OUTSIDE COOLING OFF PERIOD" in the subject line. If you are outside the cooling-off period, you have several flexible options:
  • Transfer to a different course if your current course is unsuitable and an alternate, suitable course exists.
  • Transfer your course to another person (such as a friend or family member).
  • Pause your course for an agreed period.

I want to learn more Mind Skills for Mountain Bikers! What other courses do you have available?

We have a few courses planned and are busy building these! In the meantime, we'd love to hear from as many mountain bikers as possible, so we know the kinds of things different riders want to learn more about. If you have a spare couple of minutes, please let us know your thoughts about brains, bikes and what you'd like to keep improving via this quick Q and A: https://forms.gle/71oisLWLmW5Bax4f6

Love bikes. Love trails. Love learning about all these things my brain does that I never gave it credit for. Where can I go to keep finding out more?

Thanks for the lovely feedback! ;) Keep an eye out for the Bike-Body-Mind column in each new issue of Australian Mountain Bike magazine. These articles are published on the AMB website at a later date.
